The Rainbow Mountain is one of the most attractive places on the road to the Apu Ausangate. Stories tell that the Mountain gives every traveler that visits this place a new opportunity. It’s inspired by the motto “If you want to see the rainbow you have to face the storm” and this teach us that there’s always a prize for our efforts as well as a new opportunity. It’s named one of the 100 places you should to go before die by National Geographic.

Rainbow Mountain 1.- Acclimatization in Rainbow mountain:

For several days you will be high above sea level. Your body needs to acclimatize slowly so you don’t suffer the annoying altitude sickness. It’s better to stay in the city of Cusco at least 2 days before the trek starts to acclimate correctly. so take precautions to be on time in the place indicated.

2.- Appropriate clothing and footwear:

The climate in the Andean zone can take sudden changes. The sun can be suffocating but once it’s hidden behind a cloud the temperature can fall quickly. It’s important to wear a coat for the night as the cold can be harmful. The footwear must be for special trekking. Take care of wearing the covered ankles to maintain better stability. It’s necessary since the terrain is often difficult and slippery.

3.- Carry Sticks:

The canes will help you a lot during the whole trip. If you have no practice with them you will soon learn how to. They will help you move safer and more comfortable by unloading some of the weight and giving you stability.

4.- Sunscreen:

Don’t forget to bring sunscreen to the trek and try to avoid exposing parts of your body to the sun. Bring a hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes.

5.- Go with your own rhythm:

It’s not a race. Most of the tours have adequate time to take things slowly along the way. We also think it’s more enjoyable to stop and rest frequently to admire the sights.

6.- Physical condition:

If you have a good physical condition you shouldn’t have any problems with the trek. If you’re not in a good physical condition walking before the trek could help.

7.- Bring Water:

It’s difficult to find water up there. Bring your own bottle of water and remember: In height you lose a lot body water by perspiration. Try to drink all the water you can.

8.- Consider chewing coca:

This is a personal option. It can give you a little push to finish the trek but it has a particular flavor you need to get accustomed to.

9.- Bring candies:

In addition to what your guide brings, we recommend having some solid candy to suck while climbing. They seem to give you energy and they distract your mind from climbing!

10.- Bring a Camera:

The landscapes are really beautiful so bring your camera and take as many photos as you can. If you follow the tips all you need to do is enjoy the Rainbow Mountain!
